Hollywood police officers shot a man Friday morning after they said he tried to ram them with his car.

It all started when Miami-Dade police tried to pull over 44-year-old Derrick Harvey at Northwest 79th Street and 17th Avenue, but he drove away, police said.

A police helicopter tracked the vehicle, and when it crossed the county line, the Miami-Dade officers backed off, and Hollywood police officers took over.

Hollywood detectives said Harvey wasn't familiar with the area and pulled onto a dead-end street at 24th Avenue and Monroe Street.

"It was hectic," said Mark Webster, who lives nearby. "It was scary."

Three squad cars blocked the only exit. Officers got out, guns drawn, and ordered Harvey to get out.

Detectives said Harvey ignored their orders and rammed one of the police cars. He then reversed again, and police gave another order to stop and get out, investigators said. Detectives said Harvey disregarded the second order and tried to run over a police officer.

That officer shot Harvey, who then crashed the car into another squad car, Hollywood police said.

"A car coming at you, that car is worse than a gun," said Lt. Norris Redding. "That's more than 3,000 pounds of metal coming toward you. Your life is in danger."

Harvey was rushed to a hospital. When he is released, he will be arrested.

“The weapon on the scene was that car. That car was the weapon,” Norris said.

No officers were hurt.

A woman who was in the car with Harvey is cooperating with the investigation.

Harvey has a long criminal record. He has been arrested 38 times since 1988.
